Senator Gregg has worked to protect and preserve more than 337,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land throughout New Hampshire, securing more than
$171 million in federal funds.  Some examples are:

  • Great Bay:  Since 1997, Senator Gregg has secured close to $56 million to protect more than 3,335 acres of key wetland tracts around Great Bay, a significant estuarine ecosystem critical to the state.  These funds have also leveraged millions of additional conservation dollars from public and private sources.
  • New England Wilderness Act:  Senator Gregg was the lead cosponsor and helped author the New England Wilderness Act of 2006, which designates approximately 34,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) as new wilderness, including 23,700 acres in the Wild River area and 10,800 acres in the Sandwich Range Wilderness.
  • White Mountain National Forest:  While in the House of Representatives, Senator Gregg supported the addition of 77,000 new acres to the WMNF.  While serving in the Senate, he has continued his strong support of the Forest and secured nearly $15 million for land acquisition and trailhead protection throughout the WMNF.
  • Coastal & Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP): In 2002, Senator Gregg created this program, which provides funding to protect coastal and estuarine lands.  Since then, he has secured funding for numerous CELCP projects, including conservation efforts at Moose Mountain, Piscassic Greenway-Newfields, and Winnicut River Headwaters-North Hampton.  As a result of his continued efforts, the program was formally authorized in 2009 as part of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009.
  • New Hampshire’s National Wildlife Refuges:  A long-time supporter of the National Wildlife Refuge System, Senator Gregg has secured more than $16 million for the protection of Lake Umbagog, as well as $12.5 million for the Silvio O. Conte Refuge.  As Governor, Senator Gregg helped acquire the John Hay National Wildlife Refuge and has continued to support the protection of this area.
  • Forest Legacy Program:  Senator Gregg has continued to champion this program and worked to ensure New Hampshire’s forests remain protected.  He has secured funding to protect forestlands such as Ossipee Pine Barrens, Crotched Mountain, Rossview Farms in Concord, and Willard Pond.
  • Lamprey River:  Senator Gregg authored legislation to designate the Lamprey River as a Wild and Scenic River and has secured more than $4.7 million for the continued protection of lands surrounding the Lamprey.
  • Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environment Technology (CICEET):  Through Senator Gregg’s efforts, $63.4 million has been secured for the creation of CICEET, which engages research institutions, the government, and the private sector to develop and implement new tools to achieve clean water and healthy coasts.
  • Connecticut Lakes Headwaters:  As co-chair of the Connecticut Lakes Headwaters Partnership Task Force, Senator Gregg facilitated the conservation of 171,500 acres of forest in northern New Hampshire due to the sale of the land by the International Paper Company.  He also secured $11.6 million in federal funds to supplement state, local and private sources of funding to purchase these lands.
